Gardeners Bromley Health and Safety Policy

Gardeners Bromley is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our clients, our employees, contractors, visitors and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out the principles and arrangements we follow when carrying out work in domestic gardens, commercial grounds and shared outdoor spaces.

Policy Statement

Our objective is to prevent accidents, injuries and ill health arising from our work activities. We aim to continuously improve our health and safety performance by identifying hazards, assessing risks and putting effective controls in place. All staff are required to take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.

This policy applies to all gardening, landscaping, maintenance and clearance tasks performed by Gardeners Bromley, including regular garden care, one off projects and seasonal work.

Management Responsibilities

Management is responsible for implementing and maintaining this policy and for ensuring that adequate resources are provided to meet our health and safety commitments. This includes:

Ensuring that risk assessments are carried out, recorded where appropriate and reviewed regularly. Providing suitable tools, machinery and equipment that are fit for purpose and properly maintained. Ensuring that staff receive appropriate training, instruction and supervision. Establishing safe systems of work and communicating these clearly to all team members. Monitoring compliance with safe working practices and taking corrective action when required. Investigating accidents, incidents and near misses to identify root causes and prevent recurrence.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees and regular subcontractors have a duty to cooperate with Gardeners Bromley in achieving high standards of health and safety. Every team member must:

Follow the instructions, procedures and training provided. Use tools, machinery and personal protective equipment correctly. Report any hazards, defects, near misses or incidents as soon as practicable. Refrain from misusing or interfering with anything provided for health, safety or welfare. Take reasonable care for their own safety and for the safety of others who may be affected by their work.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before starting work at a new site or undertaking unfamiliar tasks, an assessment of the potential risks will be carried out. This may be a documented assessment for significant or ongoing work, or a dynamic on the spot assessment for smaller, routine tasks.

The assessment considers, where relevant, the topography of the garden or grounds, weather conditions, access routes, existing structures, underground and overhead services, proximity to the public, and the nature of plants and materials on site. Control measures may include restricting access to certain areas, using guards and barriers, selecting appropriate tools, establishing clear work zones and setting specific communication methods between team members.

Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment

Gardeners Bromley ensures that all machinery and equipment used during our gardening and maintenance services is suitable, maintained and used safely. This includes mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, hand tools and any powered equipment.

Only trained and authorised personnel may use specialist or high risk equipment. Pre use checks are carried out to identify defects, and any damaged or faulty items are taken out of service until repaired or replaced. Equipment is stored, transported and used according to manufacturers instructions and established safe systems of work.

Personal Protective Equipment

Suitable personal protective equipment is provided and used whenever it is required by risk assessments or site conditions. Depending on the task, this may include protective gloves, safety boots, eye and hearing protection, high visibility garments, respiratory protection and weather appropriate clothing.

All team members are responsible for looking after their protective equipment, reporting any defects or losses, and wearing it as instructed whenever tasks demand it.

Chemicals, Fertilisers and Substances

When using any gardening products such as pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers, fuels or cleaning agents, Gardeners Bromley follows safe handling, storage and application procedures. Products are used strictly in line with manufacturers guidance and relevant safety data information.

Only trained staff may handle higher risk substances. Containers are clearly labelled, securely closed and stored safely when not in use. We aim to minimise the use of chemicals and will always consider safer alternatives and environmentally sensitive methods where possible.

Manual Handling and Physical Work

Gardening often involves lifting, carrying and repetitive physical tasks. To reduce the risk of strains and injuries, we promote safe manual handling techniques, use mechanical aids where available and plan work to minimise unnecessary lifting.

Heavy items are shared between team members whenever practicable, and loads are assessed before any lifting takes place. Staff are encouraged to take appropriate rest breaks and to report any discomfort or early signs of injury so adjustments can be made.

Public and Client Safety

We take particular care to protect clients, visitors and members of the public in and around the areas where we work. Measures may include setting up temporary barriers or warning signs, cordoning off hazardous areas, scheduling higher risk work at quieter times, and keeping access routes clear and tidy.

Tools and machinery are never left running or unattended in places where others could be put at risk. Sharp tools, fuel and chemicals are kept secure when not in use, and debris is cleared promptly to prevent slips, trips and falls.

Environmental Conditions and Weather

Outdoor work is influenced by weather and site conditions. Gardeners Bromley monitors conditions and adjusts working practices accordingly. Work may be postponed, modified or stopped in situations such as high winds, lightning, extreme temperatures or other conditions that could make work unsafe.

Additional precautions are taken on wet or uneven ground and when working on slopes, near water features or around unstable surfaces.

Training, Communication and Supervision

All new staff receive an introduction to our health and safety procedures as part of their induction. Ongoing training is provided to ensure skills remain up to date, especially in relation to new equipment, techniques or regulations.

Supervisors ensure that less experienced staff are adequately supported and that safety standards are applied consistently. Health and safety information is communicated clearly, and staff are encouraged to raise any concerns or suggestions for improvement.

Accident Reporting and Policy Review

All accidents, incidents and near misses that occur during work activities must be reported as soon as possible. Records are kept to help identify patterns, learn from events and strengthen our controls.

This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and updated whenever there are significant changes in our operations, equipment or relevant regulations.
